About the workshop

Block printing is a technique for printing text, images or patterns, used widely throughout East Asia. Traditionally, a design is sketched and carved into a block of wood, before applying ink or dye, and stamping it onto a finished cloth. It is one of the earliest, simplest and slowest of all methods of textile printing!

At Lokka Lekkr Makers Studio, block printing is made simpler and faster to learn, using foam or linoleum as a replacement for wooden blocks that require more skill to carve. In this hands-on workshop, design your own tote bag with Peranakan motifs, in an intimate studio housed within the cultural depths of Kampong Glam. Join Hairul, the Creative Director at Lokka Lekkr Makers Studio and an academia-slash-artist with multiple works in iconography & pattern making, on an enriching journey into the history and techniques of block printing, crossed with Peranakan culture!
