Traditional Indigo Dyeing
Experience Ancient Chinese Indigo Dyeing as done by ethnic minorities!
About the workshop
Learn about the traditional tradecraft of Ancient Indigo Dyeing as passed on through the Dong minority, originating from the Guizhou Province. The history of Indigo-dyeing goes back to the Qin and Han Dynasties, where it became and remained a popular material for clothing for 1000 years. In Chinese, any plant that can be used for indigo extraction is generally named "Lan Cao" (literally, "blue grass").
Indigo Dyeing, as done by ethnic minorities in the past, is a fading technique that uses natural "Lan Cao" extracted dye instead of chemical dye. To attain the result of the patterns on the cloth, you will learn about the Dong Ethnic Minority's own techniques passed down through generations - making use of our own hands and wood built apparatus. Look forward to bringing home your own hand-made and hand-dyed cotton fabric pieces! All Indigo-dyed cloth retains a faint fragrance and is naturally moth-proof :)
