Public Class · Exercise your creativity & paint your very own oil umbrella!
According to historical records, the first oil-paper umbrellas in China appeared during the Han Dynasty (25-220). They soon became popular, especially amongst artists and literatis who loved writing and drawing on the umbrellas.
Oil paper umbrellas also play an important role in traditional Hakka weddings, where they are given as dowry. This is because, in Hakka dialect, the word for “paper” and “child” has the same sound, so the umbrellas are a blessing for the bride to have many sons and grandsons!
