About the workshop
The term Peranakan generally refers to people of mixed Chinese and Malay/Indonesian heritage; coined after a Malay term meaning “person born here and descended from elsewhere.” Many Peranakans trace their origins to 15th-century Malacca where their ancestors were thought to be Chinese traders who married local women - Peranakan males are known as babas while the females are known as nyonyas (or nyonyas).
In this workshop, you will learn why Nyonya Kueh and Ondeh Ondeh are culinary items that are a combination of different Nanyang cultures - a melting pot of Chinese, Malay, Indian and Western/European influences, and Peranakan heritage. Learn the origins and influences of these beloved dishes as well as why they have evolved into the delicious desserts they are today!

What you will experience
1. Learn about Peranakan culture and what makes it so unique in this traditional Peranakan shophouse
2. Our chef will show you how to make Ondeh-Ondeh in a live demonstration before you start rolling the dough and mould the fillings yourselves at respective stations
3. Receive recipes you can bring home!
4. Adjourn to the private dining room upstairs and enjoy a selection of traditional Peranakan Kuehs + blue tea with your fellow participants.
5. Learn the secret to living a long life and how to eat various kueh the "right" way!
