Try your hand at Seal Carving!
Pick up a traditional skill and carve your own name onto a seal!
About the workshop
Chinese Seal Carving, combining calligraphy with carving, is one of the most special Chinese traditional arts and has a history of more than 3700 years. It sprang up in the pre-Qin period, developing in the Qin Dynasty and Han Dynasty, before declining during the Jin Dynasty to Song Dynasty, and reviving again in the Ming Dynasty and Qing Dynasty. Chinese Seal Carving thrives today. Many countries coming to China for international conferences receive Seal Carvings from the Chinese government as presents, and non-governmental organizations often hold seal carving activities for culture and art exchange.
In this carving experience workshop, we will share with you the history and evolution of Chinese Seal Carving, and teach you how to carve your own seal! Students can choose one Chinese character beforehand and try to complete it with the help of the teacher during the workshop. Finally, at the end of the course, the teacher will give each student a seal carved with his/her own Chinese name! (If you don't have a Chinese name - feel free to search for a Chinese Character that speaks to your heart)
