About the workshop

Peranakan beading was a tradition practiced by Peranakan ladies (nyonyas) in the past when it was customary for women to be able to bead their own shoes before getting married. Before their wedding night, nyonyas would hand-bead a pair of Kasut Manek (Peranakan beaded shoes) for their husbands-to-be as well as themselves. These beloved Kasut Manek would be worn on the newly weds wedding day in preparation of beginning a marital life of bliss together.

In this two-hour session, find out more about the origins of Peranakan beading, what makes these beads and the practice so special, and learn how to create a beautiful piece of Peranakan bead art on your own.

Weekend workshops may be available upon request.

Take note: Workshops will be closed for booking from May 1 - June 10 (2022).
