Public Class · Learn the traditional art of gift wrapping with fabrics!
Furoshiki is a Japanese wrapping technique using fabric, traditionally used to transport clothes, gifts, or other goods. The art possibly dates back as far as the Nara period (710 - 794 AD), but its name (which means 'bath spread') was derived from the Edo period practice of bundling clothes in bathhouses to prevent a mix-up of the bathers' clothes.
With the invention of conventional wrapping paper, plastic bags and other transporting products, the art of Furoshiki has been largely lost and forgotten – until now! With the rising trend of going green and being eco-friendly, Furoshiki is being recognized as a flexible, versatile, elegant and eco-friendly way to modern-day options. Come learn how to use fabrics to wrap up and carry food, gifts, and other items. Avoid lots of wrapping paper, ribbon and plastic waste in the upcoming festive season!
In this workshop, you will learn about the different types of fabrics, textures, designs and sizes to use for different items. You will also learn basic Furoshiki techniques and have a hands on experience in using fabrics to create unique gift wrapping! You will also receive professional advice on other usages of such fabrics, including tips on how to create your own customized prints through screen printing!
At the end of the workshop, you will get to bring home a piece of vintage fabric collected from the 1950s along with a Peranakan tile magnet!
