Painting in the traditional style is known today in Chinese as guóhuà (simplified Chinese: 国画; traditional Chinese: 國畫), meaning "national" or "native painting", as opposed to Western styles of art which became popular in China in the 20th century. Traditional painting involves essentially the same techniques as calligraphy and is done with a brush dipped in black ink or coloured pigments; oils are not used.
As with calligraphy, the most popular materials on which paintings are made are paper and silk. The finished work can be mounted on scrolls, such as hanging scrolls or handscrolls. Traditional painting can also be done on album sheets, walls, lacquerware, folding screens, fans and other media.
During Chinese history, fans appeared in a variety of shapes, of which folding fan and round fan are of most importance. A variety of materials could be used for round fan's covering but majority of coverings for round fan is made of all kinds of silk. And only the silk which is light and thin would be used for round fan coverings.
Despite its small size, the authors worked hard on the composition and created their unique characteristics, sometimes even better than works on ordinary painting of calligraphies.
In ancient Chinese paintings of ladies, it is common to see the images of a beautiful woman handling a round fan. It also plays a key role in innumerable legends, poetry and novels. For example, fan is the thread going through the whole legend of The Peach Blossom Fan.
Round fan has rooted in Chinese culture and kept its unique style. There are various kinds of fans all around the world, but all of them are different from round fan. Round fan is the quintessence of Chinese culture.
