About the workshop

What does Peranakan mean? The term Peranakan generally refers to people of mixed Chinese and Malay/Indonesian heritage. Many Peranakans trace their origins to 15th-century Malacca where their ancestors were thought to be Chinese traders who married local women. Peranakan males are known as babas while the females are known as nyonyas (or nyonyas).

In this private boutique tour, learn about Peranakan culture whilst sampling some of Peranakan culture's most classic food dishes and desserts. Observe a demonstration on Peranakan shoe beading and if any of the above excites you - book a separate session learning how to make these dishes or try your hand at shoe beading yourselves!

Take note: Workshops are unavailable during the Chinese Lunar New Year Period.

What you will experience

1. Introductory talk on the Peranakan culture and shared heritage of Singapore
2. Peranakan shoe beading demonstration
